Freshman and sophomore students not on scholarship can try out the program commitment free for up to two years. There is plenty of time to try out the program and see if the Air Force will be the right fit for you before incurring a service commitment.
Freshman (HSSP) scholarship recipients may try out the AFROTC program commitment-free for their entire first year.
After completing all Air Force ROTC and academic degree requirements, AFROTC cadets accept a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, appointed by the President of the United States.
The length of your initial service commitment depends on your career. Most Air Force ROTC graduates incur a four-year, active duty service commitment. Pilots and other rated (flying) career fields incur a longer active duty service commitment.
